Thanks, But No Thanks, For Sabathia, Sheets, and Shouse

Well, it was worth a try. The Brewers offers of arbitration were declined by the trio of CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets, and Brian Shouse. It's fair to say that each pitcher declined the offer in hopes of finding more years elsewhere. While I hope we still resign Shouse (at the very least), this means that many draft picks could be coming the Brewers way should they sign elsewhere.

All these guys figure to be quite busy as the Winter Meetings are officially underway. There's a lot to report from the Brewers end, and Bernie's Crew has everything wrapped up in a nice little package for you. The highlights:

* Doug Melvin says there is no truth to the rumor that the Brewers will extend their offer to six years AND offer Sabathia an opt-out clause.

* The New York Yankees are not only targeting Sabathia, but Ben Sheets as well.

* The Brewers have re-signed Todd Coffey to a deal worth $800K which includes $200K worth of incentives.

* Craig Counsell's agent is pursuing the Kansas City Royals, and not the other way around.

* The Brewers will likely re-sign Mike Lamb.

There's a lot more good information in his posting, and should be plenty more to come as this is one of the most crucial off-seasons in Brewers history.

Apparently the Brewers are looking at Brian Fuentes & JJ Putz as closer options. It looks like Kerry Wood is going to the Indians ... thank goodness! I have a hard time believing that the Brewers were seriously considering him. Imagine what a sick feeling we Brewer fans would get sitting in the Miller Park stands (which are teeming with Cub fans, BTW) watching Kerry Wood blow saves for US. Forget it.
