It's Not Looking Like Nolan

Mike Nolan to the Packers looked to be a sure thing just a week ago, but now Mike McCarthy will have to look elsewhere for his defensive coordinator. The former 49ers head coach will be the new defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, according to the NFL Network. Nolan will join the staff of new head coach Josh McDaniels, who was just given his first head coaching job at the age of 32.

In all honesty, I'm a little disappointed we let Nolan get away. I was excited to see him team back up with his buddy McCarthy, and also to see how he'd work the 3-4 scheme into Green Bay. I wonder if this was a result of McCarthy not wanting Nolan to join him, Thompson wanting to go in a different direction, or Nolan's desire to be in Denver. We'll have to wait and see.

So it's another candidate off the board as the Packers slowly look to fill a major coaching position. One of the more touted defensive coordinators out there, Gregg Williams, was in for an interview last weekend but no word yet on how the interview went. Eagles secondary coach Sean McDermott is emerging as a candidate, but he could be tied up until after the Super Bowl due to a surprising playoff run. Jim Haslett remains a possibility, as do Winston Moss and Chuck Cecil.

At this point, I don't think we can afford to wait for McDermott, no matter how enamored McCarthy might be with him. The Packers need to hire Gregg Williams, and they need to do it soon. Sometime within the next couple of hours would be nice.

If Jim Schwartz is, indeed, a leading candidate in Detroit, I expect Gregg Williams to quickly replace him in Tennessee.

As for McDermott, not only could he be tied up until after the Super Bowl, but also I've read that the Eagles can block any move of his other than becoming a head coach. With Jim Johnson in his late 60s, perhaps the Eagles won't let him leave - with the intent of eventually (perhaps soon) having him succeed Johnson.

Long message short: I won't be surprised if the Packers don't end up with Nolan, Williams, or McDermott.
