NHL Playoff Update, Wisconsin Style

Now that our beloved Sabres are out of the playoffs, we still have some UW-Madison boys to follow. And it just so happens that they both play for the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks are the one seed in the Western Conference, and are facing the defending Western Conference Champs in the Detroit Red Wings. San Jose has a 3-0 lead in the series, after winning all three games by a score of 4-3.

The guy who has played a huge role in this series, and playoffs for that matter, is Joe Pavelski who you see above. We here at The Bucky Channel have had to deal with this kid before. In high school he ended the hopes and dreams of our hockey team making it to State when he played for Stevens Point. In 2006 totally redeemed himself as he helped our Badgers win the NCAA Division I National Championship.

Now though, he is just doing work on the Red Wings in the NHL. In the three games so far this series he has four goals and three assists. That puts him in the lead for most total points in the playoffs with 15, and he also has the most goals in the playoffs with nine. At the age of 25, to be able to do something like this in the playoffs is a big deal. He is a real fun and exciting guy to watch on the ice. I'm not sure why playoff hockey doesn't get the TV coverage it deserves, but someday I have a feeling all the games will be on national TV, especially in the first round.

Another Wisconsin hockey player also on this Sharks team is Dany Heatley. You may know him more then Pavelski, because he lost control of his Ferrari and was injured badly a few years back. The passenger in the car suffered skull injuries, and he died six days later. It was one of those things that really ended his career in Atlanta. Since then he has moved on and he has been a good player, but it must be hard to play with that on your mind. In the playoffs so far this year he has been quiet in the goal scoring category. He had been an assist master in the first round but finally found the back of the net in game one of the Red Wings series of the to help the Sharks get out to an early lead. He has nine total points in these playoffs so far, but I see him getting hot late when they really need him.

So if you get a chance to watch these guys play you should take advantage of it. This is a high scoring team, but sometimes they lack defense. It kind of sucks that they play on the West Coast as most of the games are on late at night. But Game 4 is at a reasonable time, on Thursday night at 6:30 our time on Versus. Hockey is a sport that gets much more intense in the playoffs which helps you really fall in love with the sport, while at the same time supporting your former UW- Madison hockey players.

If these guys don't interest you there are plenty of other series to check out. Pittsburgh is up 2-1 on Montreal. The Boston Bruins are up 2-0 on the Philadelphia Flyers. Last but not least the Chicago Blackhawks are tied 1-1 with the Vancouver Canucks. All those are best of seven game series. So many choices to find yourself a new team to follow, and find yourself a new sport.

Sorry Wings are down 3-0 in the series, so I figured he was on his way out of the playoffs.
