World Cup Thoughts: Saturday, June 12th

Of course, the big game for all of us was the USA vs. England matchup, but I wanted to make that it's own separate post as I catch up with some articles on this lazy afternoon. Let's look at the two other games from Saturday though quick:

South Korea 2, Greece 0

Not really a surprising outcome in the morning game, as Greece is far from the team that they were when they won the Euro Championships in 2004. South Korea used their speed to dominate the Greeks in this one, scoring within the first six minutes of each half to get the 2-0 victory. The win gives South Korea real hope that they can advance out of a group which also includes Argentina and Nigeria. With the loss, Greece is all but done, and I would predict them to go winless in this World Cup.

Argentina 1, Nigeria 0

A very good soccer match played between the two teams that I predicted to advance out of this group. Losing here is unfortunate for Nigeria, but they looked very strong in defeat especially thanks to the play of goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama. He made some saves that were just short of impossible, and really kept Nigeria hanging around longer than they should have against a very strong Argentinian side. I really think Argentina is going to go far in this cup, especially because of how strong Lionel Messi looked. He wasn't able to put one in the net, but he did rip off some shots that would have scored on lesser keepers. The Argentina goal came via one of the toughest headers you'll see in this tournament, which was scored in 5th minute by Gabriel Heinze.
