Da Eagles Are Back!

It came up fast, but it is that time of year again. The college basketball season is starting, but first we have to get a weeks worth of crap games out of the way. Marquette started the season at home against the Prairie View A&M Panthers. Where exactly is that you ask? Well, Prairie View is in Texas just northwest of Houston, click here if you would like to know more., although I doubt this link will be followed. All you need to know about the Panthers is that Marquette took care of business against them on Friday night, and the Golden Eagles season is officially underway.

With the score at 15-7 in favor of Marquette, the Eagles' Dwight Buycks made a three pointer to start a 16-0 run. After that, the Eagles just keep adding on to the scoreboard the rest of the night, outlasting the Panthers 97-58.

The only real surprise of the night is that Darius Johnson-Odom didn't get the start for the Golden Eagles. Highly touted freshman guard Vander Blue looked good in practice, so Buzz decided to throw him in the starting line up. Well did that ever pay off for Mr. Williams, because Blue just filled the stat sheet. Vander Blue finished the night with seven points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals, and three blocks. Let me give you some time to catch your breath, because he really did a little bit of everything Friday night. Not a bad start for a freshman playing his first game, especially in front of the home crowd.

Marquette looked good shooting, but from the free throw line it was a rough night for them. They got to the line 35 times, but only made 22 of those shots. You have to get in the habit of making free throws for when games are close in Big East play. That cost them a few games last year, so they better get it figured out soon. Other than that in a game like this it is hard to point out any other mistakes.

As for as the other guys, it was Jimmy Butler leading the way with 18 points. DJ-O did get into the game, but was 4-10 from the field with 13 points. I hope this might have been an early season wake up call for him. Buzz looks like he is making it clear early that with this young team he is going to play who he feels is working the hardest. More stats are at your fingertips, just click here.

Marquette will now get a short rest as they face Bucknell Sunday at home. Prairie View A&M will also get a short rest, they are playing the Badgers on Sunday. Could be a rough start for Prairie View A&M as they might take a few beat downs before they leave the state of Wisconsin this weekend.

With Marquette, I'm not sure what they are in store for this season. It sounds like they have a lot of young talent, but will they be able to handle Big East ball? Before they get to Big East play they have to face the number one team in the nation in Duke on Monday November 22, so that should give us some insight to how good this team can or can not be.
