Farewell, Salomon Torres

A $3.75 million option on Salmon Torres will no longer need to be exercised, as the Brewers closer has informed General Manager Doug Melvin he will be retiring.

"I wanted to make it easy for him," Torres told JS Online's Tom Haudricourt. "I already had made up my mind and wanted to tell him this was my last season."

It was likely the Brewers would indeed pick up his option before the deadline this Saturday, but I'm not so sure Torres would have been the closer next year. He faltered a bit down the stretch, and seemed to be more effective as an 8th inning guy.

So the question remains, who does close for the Brewers next season? Gagne, Mota, and Shouse are all free agents, so the bullpen is going to need work anyway. The Brewers have been mentioned as a possible suitor for Brian Fuentes, which remains a possibility. Seth McClung has also been rumored as a possible closer, but he'll likely be in the rotation. The possibilities are endless, really.

We'll miss you, Salomon.
