Hoffman Shows Brewers Some Love

Thursday, January 8, 2009 ·

When you wake up to a text message that reads "Hells Bells", that either means one of two things. One, that your buddy is a giant AC/DC fan and he just heard the song on the radio, or two, that Trevor Hoffman has just signed with the Brewers. This morning, it happened to be option number two.

There will be no question as to who the Brewers closer will be this year, despite their ever-changing bullpen. Hoffman has agreed to a 1-year deal in which he will make $6 million guaranteed. He could make up to an additional $1.5 million in incentives. It's a one-year deal outright, as there is no player or club option for a year two.

How do I feel about this move? How about, "Thank God". All I ever wanted, all I ever needed was for the Brewers to sign a big-name free agent who actually still has some talent left. And while Trevor Hoffman may not be the same player he used to be, he's still worth the uptick in optimism I'm feeling today.

I honestly thought he was going to the Dodgers, but then again, I thought Sabathia was going to go to the West Coast too. While Los Angeles would have been closer to home for Hoffman, Milwaukee ultimately tried harder to get him. Conversations with Ken Macha, trainer Roger Caplinger, Jason Kendall, and even almost-traded Mike Cameron helped persuade Hoffman to come to the Midwest. This is a good move, and I thank Doug Melvin for bringing a smile to my face this morning.

By the way, AC/DC is terrible. Mike and the Mechanics, now that's a band.

UPDATE FROM BEAR: Winks how do you mention Mike and the Mechanics and not link this awesome 80's video with mini movie imbeded. I love the 80's.
